I Hate Free Buttons, Circa 1987

The scene: Graphics class with Mr. Michaels, Clyde A. Erwin High School. “Career Day,” or something. We had the brilliant idea of making free buttons for people, while they waited. I guess this was to demonstrate the glory of a career in graphic design.

After the 8 millionth button, Mr. Steve and I decided it would be cool and punk to make a button that says what the button says.

Oddly enough, we weren’t terribly popular in high school…

A Good Cause…

A Good Cause - Support Autism Research and Treatment

TonerForAutism.com is a great cause, and it’s a simple one to support. We all use printers, and we all go through too much toner and ink.

I’m a father of 3, and while my children are all blessedly healthy, I have friends and colleagues that have children with Autism. It’s a confusing condition. And it’s sadly on the rise – big time.

I love kids, and I hate to see suffering of any sort – especially in children. TonerForAutism.com is out to raise awareness and raise money for what is considered to be a curable, treatable and preventable disease.

Check it out, pass it around. If you can use it – great! If you can’t, maybe you know of a business that does go through large amounts of toner or ink. Recommend it.

Learn more about autism, stock up on ink, do some good.

There. I’ve done my good deed for the day. Back to coffee, old gothic music and logo design land for me.

Graphic Designer’s Weekend…

I’ve decided that the weekends will be dedicated to something a little different than my normal daily banter. I know you’ll miss it, but…

Found this little nugget o’ fun.

Have a good one!

Sometimes, You Have to Laugh

I’ve found that the freelance life requires me to laugh. A LOT.

I think I’ll create a list (lists are a good way to keep track of things – there, that’ll serve as my info for today) to keep track of the things I should do when stresses set in.

Cable Modem Dead: Read an Al Jaffee comic.
Bad Customer Interaction: Big Lebowski
Hard Drive Malfunction: The Young Ones Box set in it’s entirety.
Losing Out on a Bid: Seinfeld or Simpsons
Client Requesting Comic Sans:

Seriously, people – we’ve got to do away with Comic Sans. I wish we had one of those Men In Black memory eraser things so we could roam the globe and eliminate every copy of Comic Sans, then wipe free the memory of such an offending font.

Sadly, I have more than 5 copies installed. Just in case…

Hmm – maybe tomorrow we talk font management.

ELVIS! DESIGN! ELVIS!!!

Honestly – this guy had to be the greatest performer ever. When you have millions of people imitating you, you’ve obviously done something right.

I’d love to be imitated. Seems like a lot of designers and design ideology runs on parallel tracks, but I want to be imitated.

Ah – but check out Design Is Kinky. Lots of great stuff, lots of art and illustration. Very cool. Very inspirational. I think that’s what Elvis had – a lot of inspiration. Keeps you fresh.

Plus, having people write songs for you to swivel your hips to ain’t bad, either. Still trying to figure out how that works in the design field…
